In South and South East Asia three genera of fish species i.e. Tor, Neolissochilus and Naziritor are commonly known as Mahseer with at least 47 species. Among these 23 belongs to genus Tor, 22 to Neolissochilus and one to Naziritor i.e. Naziritor zhobensis. Recently another species added to genus Naziritor is Naziritor chelynoides in India. Among Tor species Tor putitora (Hamilton) is the most widely distributed Mahseer in Pakistan and other countries of the Indian subcontinent. However, based alone on morphological characters some authors identify the Pakistani counterparts as Tor macrolepis (Heckel), (a species presumed to be found exclusively in the Indus River system) distinct from Tor putitora (a species found in Ganga Brahmaputra River system). In order to resolve this taxonomic ambiguity, present study carried out meristic and morphometric measurements of Mahseer collected from a total of 11 water bodies of Pakistan. Ratios between the morphometric characters were calculated and statistically analyzed using t-test and correlation coefficient. Two species identified as Tor putitora and Naziritor zhobensis were the sole Mahseer inhabitants of Indus system in Pakistan. Tor putitora occurred at all surveyed sites while Nazirtor zhobensis had a distribution range from river Zhob to tributaries of river Gomal the right bank tributaries of River Indus. The study corroborates that there are no unequivocal morphological synapomorphies in any existing populations of both species. The study further demonstrates that head length, a character frequently used in Mahseer taxonomy, is not a good measure for species identification. Finally the present study establishes that Naziritor zhobensis still exists in the water bodies of Pakistan and that golden Mahseer occurring in Indus riverine system of Pakistan is Tor putitora.


No sul e sudeste da Ásia, três gêneros de espécies de peixes, ou seja, Tor, Neolissochilus e Naziritor, são comumente conhecidos como Mahseer com pelo menos 47 espécies. Entre estas, 23 pertencem ao gênero Tor, 22 a Neolissochilus e um a Naziritor, ou seja, Naziritor zhobensis. Recentemente, outra espécie adicionada ao gênero Naziritor é Naziritor chelynoides na Índia. Entre as espécies de Tor, Tor putitora (Hamilton) é o Mahseer mais amplamente distribuído no Paquistão e em outros países do subcontinente indiano. No entanto, com base apenas em caracteres morfológicos, alguns autores identificam as contrapartes paquistanesas como Tor macrolepis (Heckel) (uma espécie que se presume ser encontrada exclusivamente no sistema do rio Indo), distinta de Tor putitora (uma espécie encontrada no sistema do rio Ganga Brahmaputra). O estudo demonstra ainda que o comprimento da cabeça, um caractere frequentemente usado na taxonomia de Mahseer, não é boa medida para identificação das espécies. Finalmente, o presente estudo estabelece que Naziritor zhobensis ainda existe nos corpos d'água do Paquistão e que o Mahseer dourado ocorrendo no sistema fluvial Indo do Paquistão é Tor putitora.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found conflicting results about the association of atopic dermatitis (AD) with hypertension. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether AD and AD severity are associated with hypertension. METHODS: A systematic review was performed of published studies in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and GREAT (Global Resource for EczemA Trials) databases. At least two reviewers conducted title/abstract, full-text review and data extraction. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: Fifty-one studies met the inclusion criteria and 19 had sufficient data for meta-analysis. AD was associated with higher odds of hypertension compared with healthy controls [increased in nine of 16 studies; pooled prevalence 16·4% vs. 13·8%; random-effects regression, pooled unadjusted odds ratio (OR) 1·16, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·04-1·30], but lower odds of hypertension compared with psoriasis [decreased in five of eight studies; 15·4% vs. 24·8% (OR 0·53, 95% CI 0·37-0·76)]. In particular, moderate-to-severe AD was associated with hypertension compared with healthy controls [increased in four of six studies; 24·9% vs. 14·7% (OR 2·33, 95% CI 1·10-4·94)]. Hypertension was commonly reported as an adverse event secondary to AD treatments, particularly systemic ciclosporin A. Limitations include lack of longitudinal studies or individual-level data, and potential confounding. CONCLUSIONS: AD, particularly moderate-to-severe disease, was associated with increased hypertension compared with healthy controls, but with lower odds than for psoriasis.

Water stress executes severe influences on the plant growth and development through modifying physio-chemical properties. Therefore, a field experiment was designed to evaluate the antioxidant status and their enhancements strategies for water stress tolerance in chickpea on loam and clay loam soils under agro-ecological conditions of Arid Zone Research Institute, Bahawalpur (29.3871 °N, 71.653 °E) and Cholistan farm near Derawer (28.19°N, 71.80°E) of Southern Punjab, Pakistan during winter 2014-15. Experimental treatments comprised of two chickpea cultivars i.e. Bhakhar 2011 (drought tolerant) and DUSHT (drought sensitive), two water stress levels i.e. water stress at flowering stage and water stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage including well watered (control) and two exogenous application of osmoprotectants i.e. glycine betaine (GB) 20 ppm and proline 10 uM including distilled water (control). Results indicated that water stress at various growth stages adversely affects the growth, yield and quality attributes of both chickpea cultivars. Exogenous application of GB and proline improved the growth, yield and quality parameters of both chickpea cultivars even under water stress conditions. However, superior results were obtained with exogenously applied GB on Bhakhar 2011 under well-watered conditions. Similarly, foliar spray of GB on chickpea cultivar Bhakhar 2011 under stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage produced maximum superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase contents. These results suggested that application of GB mitigates the adverse effects of water stress and enhanced tolerance in chickpea mainly due to higher antioxidant enzymes activity, demonstrating the protective measures of plant cells in stress condition. Hence, antioxidants status might be a suitable method for illustrating water stress tolerance in chickpea.


O estresse hídrico exerce fortes influências no crescimento e no desenvolvimento das plantas, modificando as propriedades físico-químicas. Portanto, a presente atividade de pesquisa foi projetada para avaliar o status antioxidante e suas estratégias de aprimoramento para tolerância ao estresse hídrico no grão-de-bico em condiçõesa groecológicas, no Instituto de Pesquisa da Zona Árida, Bahawalpur (29.3871 ° N, 71.653 ° E) e fazenda do Cholistan, perto de Derawer (28.19 ° N, 71,80 ° E), no sul de Punjab, Paquistão, durante Rabi 2014-15. Tratamentos experimentais compostos de dois genótipos de grão-de-bico, como Bhakhar 2011 (tolerante à seca) e DUSHT (sensível à seca), dois níveis de estresse hídrico, ou seja, estresse hídrico no estágio de floração, estresse hídrico na fase de floração e estresse hídrico na fase de floração + formação de vagem + estágio de enchimento de grãos, incluindo água bem controlada (controle) e duas aplicações exógenas de osmoprotetores, isto é, glicina betaína 20 ppm e prolina 10 uM, incluindo água destilada (controle). Water stress is one of the major factor restricting the growth and development of chickpea plants by inducing various morphological and physiological changes. Therefore, the present research activity was designed to improve the chickpea productivity under water stress conditions by modulating antioxidant enzyme system. Experimental treatments comprised of two chickpea genotypes i.e. Bhakhar 2011 (drought tolerant) and DUSHT (drought sensitive), two water stress levels i.e. water stress at flowering stage and water stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage including well watered (control) and three exogenous application of nutrients i.e. KCl 200 ppm, MgCl2, 50 ppm and CaCl2, 10 mM including distilled water (control). Results indicated that water stress at various growth stages adversely affects the growth, yield and quality attributes of both chickpea cultivars. Exogenous application of nutrients improved the growth, yield and antioxidant enzyme activities of both chickpea genotypes even under water stress conditions. However, superior results were obtained with foliar spray of potassium chloride on Bhakhar 2011 under well-watered conditions. Similarly, foliar spray of potassium chloride on chickpea cultivar Bhakhar 2011 cultivated under stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage produced significantly higher contents of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase. These results suggests that the application of potassium chloride mitigates the adverse effects of water stress and enhanced tolerance in chickpea mainly due to higher antioxidant enzymes activity, demonstrating the protective measures of plant cells in stress conditions.


O estresse hídrico é um dos principais fatores que restringem o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das plantas de grão-de-bico, induzindo várias alterações morfológicas e fisiológicas. Portanto, a presente atividade de pesquisa foi projetada para melhorar a produtividade do grão-de-bico em condições de estresse hídrico, por meio da modulação do sistema de enzimas antioxidantes. Tratamentos experimentais compostos de dois genótipos de grão-de-bico, ou seja, Bhakhar 2011 (tolerante à seca) e DUSHT (sensível à seca), dois níveis de estresse hídrico, ou seja, estresse hídrico na fase de floração e estresse hídrico na floração + formação de vagens + estágio de enchimento de grãos incluindo bem irrigado (controle) e três aplicações exógenas de nutrientes, ou seja, KCl 200 ppm, MgCl2 50 ppm e CaCl2 10 mM, incluindo água destilada (controle). Os resultados indicaram que o estresse hídrico em vários estágios de crescimento afeta negativamente os atributos de crescimento, rendimento e qualidade de ambas as cultivares de grão-de-bico. A aplicação exógena de nutrientes melhorou o crescimento, o rendimento e as atividades das enzimas antioxidantes de ambos os genótipos de grão-de-bico, mesmo em condições de estresse hídrico. No entanto, resultados superiores foram obtidos com pulverização foliar de cloreto de potássio em Bhakhar 2011, em condições bem irrigadas. Da mesma forma, a pulverização foliar de cloreto de potássio na cultivar de grão-de-bico Bhakhar 2011 cultivada sob estresse na fase de floração + formação de vagens + enchimento de grãos produziu teores significativamente maiores de superóxido dismutase, peroxidase e catalase. Esses resultados sugerem que a aplicação de cloreto de potássio atenua os efeitos adversos do estresse hídrico e aumenta a tolerância no grão-de-bico, principalmente em razão de mais atividade de enzimas antioxidantes, demonstrando as medidas protetoras das células vegetais em condições de estresse.

Esses resultados sugeriram que a aplicação de glicina betaína atenua os efeitos adversos do estresse hídrico e aumenta a tolerância no grão-de- bico, principalmente pela maior atividade de enzimas antioxidantes, demonstrando medidas protetoras das células vegetais em condições de estresse. Portanto, o status de antioxidantes pode ser um método adequado para ilustrar a tolerância ao estresse hídrico no grão-de-bico.

Abstract Water stress is one of the major factor restricting the growth and development of chickpea plants by inducing various morphological and physiological changes. Therefore, the present research activity was designed to improve the chickpea productivity under water stress conditions by modulating antioxidant enzyme system. Experimental treatments comprised of two chickpea genotypes i.e. Bhakhar 2011 (drought tolerant) and DUSHT (drought sensitive), two water stress levels i.e. water stress at flowering stage and water stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage including well watered (control) and three exogenous application of nutrients i.e. KCl 200 ppm, MgCl2, 50 ppm and CaCl2, 10 mM including distilled water (control). Results indicated that water stress at various growth stages adversely affects the growth, yield and quality attributes of both chickpea cultivars. Exogenous application of nutrients improved the growth, yield and antioxidant enzyme activities of both chickpea genotypes even under water stress conditions. However, superior results were obtained with foliar spray of potassium chloride on Bhakhar 2011 under well-watered conditions. Similarly, foliar spray of potassium chloride on chickpea cultivar Bhakhar 2011 cultivated under stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage produced significantly higher contents of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase. These results suggests that the application of potassium chloride mitigates the adverse effects of water stress and enhanced tolerance in chickpea mainly due to higher antioxidant enzymes activity, demonstrating the protective measures of plant cells in stress conditions.


Resumo O estresse hídrico é um dos principais fatores que restringem o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das plantas de grão-de-bico, induzindo várias alterações morfológicas e fisiológicas. Portanto, a presente atividade de pesquisa foi projetada para melhorar a produtividade do grão-de-bico em condições de estresse hídrico, por meio da modulação do sistema de enzimas antioxidantes. Tratamentos experimentais compostos de dois genótipos de grão-de-bico, ou seja, Bhakhar 2011 (tolerante à seca) e DUSHT (sensível à seca), dois níveis de estresse hídrico, ou seja, estresse hídrico na fase de floração e estresse hídrico na floração + formação de vagens + estágio de enchimento de grãos incluindo bem irrigado (controle) e três aplicações exógenas de nutrientes, ou seja, KCl 200 ppm, MgCl2 50 ppm e CaCl2 10 mM, incluindo água destilada (controle). Os resultados indicaram que o estresse hídrico em vários estágios de crescimento afeta negativamente os atributos de crescimento, rendimento e qualidade de ambas as cultivares de grão-de-bico. A aplicação exógena de nutrientes melhorou o crescimento, o rendimento e as atividades das enzimas antioxidantes de ambos os genótipos de grão- de-bico, mesmo em condições de estresse hídrico. No entanto, resultados superiores foram obtidos com pulverização foliar de cloreto de potássio em Bhakhar 2011, em condições bem irrigadas. Da mesma forma, a pulverização foliar de cloreto de potássio na cultivar de grão-de-bico Bhakhar 2011 cultivada sob estresse na fase de floração + formação de vagens + enchimento de grãos produziu teores significativamente maiores de superóxido dismutase, peroxidase e catalase. Water stress executes severe influences on the plant growth and development through modifying physio-chemical properties. Therefore, a field experiment was designed to evaluate the antioxidant status and their enhancements strategies for water stress tolerance in chickpea on loam and clay loam soils under agro-ecological conditions of Arid Zone Research Institute, Bahawalpur (29.3871 °N, 71.653 °E) and Cholistan farm near Derawer (28.19°N, 71.80°E) of Southern Punjab, Pakistan during winter 2014-15. Experimental treatments comprised of two chickpea cultivars i.e. Bhakhar 2011 (drought tolerant) and DUSHT (drought sensitive), two water stress levels i.e. water stress at flowering stage and water stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage including well watered (control) and two exogenous application of osmoprotectants i.e. glycine betaine (GB) 20 ppm and proline 10 uM including distilled water (control). Results indicated that water stress at various growth stages adversely affects the growth, yield and quality attributes of both chickpea cultivars. Exogenous application of GB and proline improved the growth, yield and quality parameters of both chickpea cultivars even under water stress conditions. However, superior results were obtained with exogenously applied GB on Bhakhar 2011 under well-watered conditions. Similarly, foliar spray of GB on chickpea cultivar Bhakhar 2011 under stress at flowering + pod formation + grain filling stage produced maximum superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase contents. These results suggested that application of GB mitigates the adverse effects of water stress and enhanced tolerance in chickpea mainly due to higher antioxidant enzymes activity, demonstrating the protective measures of plant cells in stress condition. Hence, antioxidants status might be a suitable method for illustrating water stress tolerance in chickpea.


O estresse hídrico exerce fortes influências no crescimento e no desenvolvimento das plantas, modificando as propriedades físico-químicas. Portanto, a presente atividade de pesquisa foi projetada para avaliar o status antioxidante e suas estratégias de aprimoramento para tolerância ao estresse hídrico no grão-de-bico em condições agroecológicas, no Instituto de Pesquisa da Zona Árida, Bahawalpur (29.3871 ° N, 71.653 ° E) e fazenda do Cholistan, perto de Derawer (28.19 ° N, 71,80 ° E), no sul de Punjab, Paquistão, durante Rabi 2014-15. A aplicação exógena de glicina betaína e prolina melhorou os parâmetros de crescimento, rendimento e qualidade de ambos os genótipos de grão- de-bico, mesmo sob condições de estresse hídrico. No entanto, resultados superiores foram obtidos com glicina betaína aplicada exogenamente em Bhakhar 2011, em condições bem regadas. Além disso, o spray foliar de glicina betaína na cultivar de grão-de-bico Bhakhar 2011, sob estresse na fase de floração + formação de vagem + enchimento de grãos, produziu o máximo de superóxido dismutase, peroxidase e catalase. In South and South East Asia three genera of fish species i.e. Tor, Neolissochilus and Naziritor are commonly known as Mahseer with at least 47 species. Among these 23 belongs to genus Tor, 22 to Neolissochilus and one to Naziritor i.e. Naziritor zhobensis. Recently another species added to genus Naziritor is Naziritor chelynoides in India. Among Tor species Tor putitora (Hamilton) is the most widely distributed Mahseer in Pakistan and other countries of the Indian subcontinent. However, based alone on morphological characters some authors identify the Pakistani counterparts as Tor macrolepis (Heckel), (a species presumed to be found exclusively in the Indus River system) distinct from Tor putitora (a species found in Ganga Brahmaputra River system). In order to resolve this taxonomic ambiguity, present study carried out meristic and morphometric measurements of Mahseer collected from a total of 11 water bodies of Pakistan. Ratios between the morphometric characters were calculated and statistically analyzed using t-test and correlation coefficient. Two species identified as Tor putitora and Naziritor zhobensis were the sole Mahseer inhabitants of Indus system in Pakistan. Tor putitora occurred at all surveyed sites while Nazirtor zhobensis had a distribution range from river Zhob to tributaries of river Gomal the right bank tributaries of River Indus. The study corroborates that there are no unequivocal morphological synapomorphies in any existing populations of both species. The study further demonstrates that head length, a character frequently used in Mahseer taxonomy, is not a good measure for species identification. Finally the present study establishes that Naziritor zhobensis still exists in the water bodies of Pakistan and that golden Mahseer occurring in Indus riverine system of Pakistan is Tor putitora.

BACKGROUND: Toxicity data regarding combinational exposure of humans to arsenic, cadmium and mercury is scarce. Although hepatotoxicity has been reported, limited information is available on their mechanistic underpinnings. The cytotoxic mechanisms of these metals were determined in HepG2 hepatocarcinoma cell lines after individual and combinational exposure. METHODS: HepG2 cells were exposed to heavy metals (sodium arsenite, cadmium chloride, and mercury chloride) individually or in combination for 24 h, after which cell density, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduced glutathione (GSH), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and caspase-3/7 activity was assessed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Cadmium (IC50 = 0.43 mg/L) and the combination (0.45 mg/L, arsenic reference) were most cytotoxic, followed by arsenic (6.71 mg/L) and mercury (28.23 mg/L). Depolarisation of the ΔΨm and reductions in ROS, GSH and ATP levels occurred. Arsenic, cadmium and the combination increased caspase-3/7 activity, while mercury reduced it. CONCLUSION: The combination produced a greater, albeit mechanistically similar, cytotoxicity compared to individual metals. Cytotoxicity was dependent on altered mitochondrial integrity, redox-status, and bioenergetics. Although the combination's cytotoxicity was associated with caspase-3/7 activity, this was not true for mercury. Heavy metal interactions should be assessed to elucidate molecular underpinnings of cytotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Multiple atopic dermatitis (AD) severity scales exist, with no gold standard for use in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: To determine the measurement properties of the Rajka-Langeland score and compare it with other clinician-reported outcomes in adults and children with AD. METHODS: We performed a prospective dermatology practice-based study using questionnaires and evaluation by a dermatologist (n = 427). RESULTS: Rajka-Langeland had good concurrent validity with the Eczema Area and Severity Index (Spearman rho = 0·63), SCORing AD (SCORAD) (rho = 0·61), objective-SCORAD (rho = 0·52) and body surface area (rho = 0·51); good convergent validity with the numeric rating scale average-itch (rho = 0·60) and worst-itch (rho = 0·59), Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (rho = 0·57), Dermatology Life Quality Index (rho = 0·53), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Itch Questionnaire (rho = 0·35-0·55) in adults and/or children; fair discriminant validity for patient- and physician-reported global AD severity; good responsiveness to change of severity of AD and itch; good reliability; internal consistency; with no floor or ceiling effects. Interpretability bands (3, clear/almost clear; 4-5, mild; 6-7, moderate; 8-9, severe) and minimal clinically important difference (1 point) were established. CONCLUSIONS: The Rajka-Langeland score showed good construct validity, reliability, internal consistency and responsiveness in adults and children with AD.

BACKGROUND: Multiple strategies have been used to evaluate the minimal important change (MIC) of the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD). The meaningfulness of these MICs is not well established across all severities of atopic dermatitis (AD). OBJECTIVES: To determine the MIC of percentage and absolute improvement of EASI and SCORAD scores in adults and children with AD. METHODS: We performed a prospective dermatology practice-based study using questionnaires and evaluation by a dermatologist (n = 826). An anchor-based approach was used to determine thresholds for the percentage and absolute MICs of EASI, SCORAD and objective SCORAD (O-SCORAD) at follow-up from baseline. RESULTS: One-grade improvements of Physician's Global Assessment (PGA) and validated Investigator Global Assessment scale for AD (vIGA-AD) were associated with 50%, 35% and 35% decreases of EASI, SCORAD and O-SCORAD, respectively. The thresholds for percentage MIC of EASI (Kruskal-Wallis test, P = 0·61), SCORAD (P = 0·07) and O-SCORAD (P = 0·09) were similar across baseline AD severities. One-grade improvements of PGA and vIGA-AD were associated with 14·0- and 14·9-point decreases of EASI, 19·9- and 14·9-point decreases of SCORAD, and 15·5- and 17·4-point decreases of O-SCORAD. The thresholds for the absolute MIC of EASI (P < 0·001), SCORAD (P < 0·001) and O-SCORAD (P < 0·001) significantly differed by baseline AD severity. Percentage and absolute MICs for EASI and SCORAD were associated with improvements of AD symptoms and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: EASI 50, SCORAD 35 and O-SCORAD 35 were meaningful percentage MICs regardless of baseline AD severity. The absolute MICs for EASI, SCORAD and O-SCORAD varied by baseline AD severity.

BACKGROUND: Multiple clinician-reported outcome measures exist for atopic dermatitis (AD) severity. However, there is no gold standard for use in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: To determine the measurement properties of the product of validated Investigator's Global Assessment for AD (vIGA) and body surface area (BSA) overall or divided into six categories (cBSA: 0%/0.1, <10%/10, <30%/30, <50%/50, <70%/70 and <90%/90-100%) and compare with other clinician-reported and patient-reported outcomes in adults and children with AD. METHODS: We performed a prospective dermatology practice-based study using questionnaires and evaluation by a dermatologist (n = 653). RESULTS: vIGA*BSA and vIGA*cBSA had good convergent validity with BSA (Spearman's ρ = 0.97 and 0.93), eczema area and severity index (ρ = 0.94 and 0.92), and objective SCORAD (ρ = 0.88 and 0.89); and weak-to-good convergent validity with Numeric Rating Scale average itch (ρ = 0.22 and 0.22) and worst itch (ρ = 0.27 and 0.28), Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (ρ = 0.44 and 0.43), Dermatology Life Quality Index (ρ = 0.48 and 0.49), ItchyQOL (ρ = 0.45 and 0.46), PROMIS Sleep Disturbance (ρ = 0.46 and 0.37) and sleep-related impairment (ρ = 0.31 and 0.31) in adults and/or children; very good discriminant validity for physician-reported global AD severity; good responsiveness to change of severity of AD and itch; and good reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [95% confidence interval]: 0.72 [0.60-0.81] and 0.74 [0.62-0.82]) with no floor or ceiling effects. Thresholds for interpretability bands and clinically important difference were established. CONCLUSIONS: vIGA*BSA and vIGA*cBSA scores showed good convergent and discriminant validity, reliability, responsiveness and interpretability in adults and children with AD, and were feasible for use in clinical practice. vIGA*BSA and vIGA*cBSA had slightly lower convergent validity than EASI or objective SCORAD, but might be more efficient to collect and score.

Combinational therapy is among the most used treatment modality's to increase cancer treatment efficacy. It may also reduce side effects, treatment time, and development of drug resistance. The effects of different analogues of vitamin A (VA) as neoadjuvant agent were observed in this study with chemotherapeutic drugs (doxorubicin and methotrexate) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) using 5-ALA and Photogem as photosensitizers in RD cells. The uptake time of photosensitizer was optimized by means of spectrophotometric measurements. Diode laser (λ = 635 nm ±â€¯1 nm) was used as an illumination source for PDT. Responses of administered drugs were assessed by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. VA and its analogues exert prophylactic and therapeutic effects. Protective or antagonistic effects (CI > 1) were observed in each of the case. These results propose that the use of VA as a neoadjuvant agent in combinational therapeutic modalities may reduce the efficacy of cancer treatment protocols as well as the existing side effects. Thus, VA is not the successful drug for combinational therapies and under treatment cancer patients should try to avoid its use with oxidative stress induction therapies (e.g. PDT, Radiotherapy, chemotherapy).

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in adults with atopic dermatitis (AD). Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Sleep Disturbance (SD) and Sleep-Related Impairment (SRI) are validated questionnaires to assess sleep in adults. Little is known about their measurement properties in adults with AD. OBJECTIVES: To assess the measurement properties of the PROMIS SD and SRI eight-item short forms in AD. METHODS: We performed a prospective dermatology-practice-based study using questionnaires and evaluation by a dermatologist (n = 420). RESULTS: PROMIS SD and SRI showed moderate correlations to each other (ρ = 0·67), and weak correlations with Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (ρ = 0·43 and 0·39, respectively); average (ρ = 0·31/0·30) and worst numerical rating scale for itch (ρ = 0·32/0·30); Eczema Area and Severity Index (ρ = 0·41/0·31); and Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) (ρ = 0·44/0·30) (Spearman correlations, P < 0·001). PROMIS SD and SRI increased significantly and stepwise with more frequent sleep disturbance, severe itch and self-reported global AD severity (ancova, P < 0·001). PROMIS SD and SRI showed good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha 0·84 and 0·91). Changes from baseline in PROMIS SD and SRI were weakly to moderately correlated with each other and with changes of multiple patient-reported and clinician-reported AD outcomes. There were no floor or ceiling effects for PROMIS SD or SRI. The median completion time for PROMIS SD and SRI was 2 min. CONCLUSIONS: PROMIS SD and SRI showed good construct validity, internal consistency, responsiveness and feasibility to assess sleep in adult patients with AD. What is already known about this topic? The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Sleep Disturbance (SD) and Sleep-Related Impairment (SRI) scales were found to be valid in adults with chronic disease. However, the validity and feasibility of PROMIS SD and SRI in atopic dermatitis remain unknown. What does this study add? This study demonstrated that PROMIS SD and SRI had good content, concurrent, convergent and discriminant validity; feasibility; and responsiveness, with no floor or ceiling effects observed. What are the clinical implications of this work? The PROMIS SD and SRI eight-item bank short forms appear to have sufficient validity and feasibility to be used as assessments for burden of sleep in adults with atopic dermatitis in clinical practice.
